You know a restaurant is good when you show up with a reservation and there is not a single seat available in the house.
The place was abuzz when I arrived at Le Rune, in Genoa. Italy, it is the flagship restaurant to the BW City Hotel. The downstairs was full of what looked like local Italians and upstairs had a large group of Asian tourists. Soon enough they cleared out so that I could have a single table in the back.
I travel alone quite a bit, and this was the perfect place to be incognito. The hustle and bustle of this place made it easy to relax and observe. Walking up to the door, I almost thought I had the wrong door because the opening was just a plain white door, no sign, no nothing…little did I know that I entered the hotel, but that there is a main dining entryway around the corner and down this cute little Italian street.
First up, they nicely cleaned and set my table with a white cloth napkin and a decanter of water. I like the simplicity of it all. Next, comes the breadbasket with an array of choices. I am trying to stick to my diet, so I pass on that white stuff. Next, they brought by a menu, 50% in Italian and 50% in English. I peruse the menu for some protein and salad… came across the mussels marinara “La Spezia” sautéed with capers and tomatoes and croutons. But ultimately ended up choosing an Angus filet seared with balsamic vinegar “castelmango” cheese and fried zucchini. I cannot say I went wrong, in fact, it was Italian perfection. With that melted cheese on top of a scrumptiously cooked medium rare 6 oz steak and crispy, thinly cut shears of zucchini, it was the perfect combination. It was superb and scrumptious all at the same time. It filled every desire I had for a steak that ever existed! No vegetarian here.
The desert was delicious! I had cheesecake with berries and basal chantilly and my friend Megan had the bitter chocolate cake with strawberry sorbet and caramel bitter orange.
So if you are ever in Genoa, be sure and enter the unmarked, unpretentious mysterious door of the restaurant inside the BW City Hotel for the most perfectly cooked steak your heart could ever desire. Here it is not about the ambiance, but it is about the food. They do not go wrong in that arena. The service was extremely attentive and friendly too, so thumbs up LE RUNE for a wonderful experience. The atmosphere was plain, but nice and quiet…my kind of perfection for a slow and easy evening.
