While typically thought of as exciting fun filled events that allow quality time with family and friends, vacations can also be nightmares. Picking the wrong location for your next vacation can leave you far more stressed than relaxed. The right destination can mean everything from the activities available, to the food you eat, and even how much time you spend underneath an umbrella.

California is widely regarded as one of the best vacation destinations that America has to offer.

More specifically, Southern California offers all the fun activities and indulgences that a vacation needs, as well as plenty of opportunities to relax and find peace of mind. Here are the top 5 reasons that vacationers should seriously consider a trip to the Golden State:

1.  Weather

The most obvious reason that people visit Southern California is for the weather–it is absolutely beautiful. The sun shines in this part of the state almost 70% of the time. Additionally, residents experience mild temperatures all year round; summer temperatures usually peak in the low 90’s, and winters don’t feature the sharp temperature drops of other parts of the country. While it does rain there and the area is susceptible to powerful storms off the Pacific Ocean, those that visit Southern California are more likely to need sunscreen than rain ponchos.

2.  Food and Drink

In addition to great weather, southern California offers all the delicious indulgences that characterize vacations. California possess a wide array of cuisine options. Because of their proximity to Mexico, major Latin influences can be found all around southern California eateries. Also, this area is historically a destination for Asian immigrants looking to seek residence in the states, which has established an Asian presence in so. Cal cuisine too. And of course, you have to think about the wine. The state of California is famous for producing some of the best wines in the world. The combination gives visitors plenty of options for them to fill their stomachs with delicious food, and relax with a glass of wine.

3.  Beaches and Surf

The state of California has over 800 miles of breathtakingly beautiful coastline. Pacific Coast Highway, which runs along the coast, through towering cliffs, quaint seaside towns, and redwood forests, is one of the best ways to sight-see up and down the West Coast. This area is known for its world renowned beaches, and surfing spots. Whether you’re an expert, or just learning to surf, the San Diego surf report has all the necessary information to plan a day surfing. Also, spending the day at the beach doesn’t have to involve surfing; swimming, tanning, and other sports are also popular beach activities. If you’d rather stay on the beach than swim or surf, southern California’s beaches provide plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

4.  Sights to See

Aside from the beaches and sprawling cities, southern California offers landscapes, nature, and animal habitats that are unique to this part of the country. While coastal cities many times don’t offer much in the way of wilderness to explore, nature filled adventures are easily accessible from any of California’s major coastal cities. A few hours in a car and you’ll find yourself surrounded by gigantic mountains, and redwood trees that are seemingly just as tall. Many of the country’s most popular national parks reside in California, and give visitors plenty of opportunities to explore California’s wilderness.

5.  Music and Entertainment

Last but certainly not least, is the music and entertainment scenes in southern California. While this area is known for Hollywood, ground-zero for most of our favorite movies and TV shows, it also has a rich music scene that thrives on the backs of struggling musicians trying to hit it big. The beach boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and sublime are all examples of bands that got their start in California, and have since toured the world with songs about their home state. In addition to music, Southern California also offers opportunities to take in a theater performance, or even see a comedy routine. One thing is for certain it is almost impossible to be bored on a vacation to California.
