In early 2018, it was rumored that LG was on the verge of unveiling a watch that would bring together the ancient art of timepieces and modern smartwatch technologies to create a revolutionary product that was a cross between the two. And in October of 2018, this rumor became reality when LG released its Watch W7, a smartwatch with mechanical hands. The watch is equipped with mechanical hands and an engraved outer rim that can tell time regardless of the smartwatch’s battery life. The watch itself is powered by a Snapdragon 2100 battery that is not the newest model but it comes with the latest Wear OS technology for a sleek design. This LG Watch W7 is perfectly suitable for all types of consumers but great for travelers. It can be purchased at Best Buy or online.
Below I will give you a rundown of the design and the specifications of the device and highlight some of my favorite aspects of using this watch while traveling. I believe this watch is for the tech aficionado that is ahead of the curve.
Here is everything you need to know about the Smartwatch LG Watch W7
Smartwatch – DESIGN
Unlike many smartwatch products that mimic the look of traditional timepieces, the LG Watch W7 comes with mechanical hands that are laid over the touchscreen but still behind the glass. This 44.5mm stainless steel watch comes with a 1.2in LCD display and 22mm silicon watch straps that are interchangeable. It is equipped with three buttons on the right side that serves different purposes.
When you hold down the top button, the watch’s hands will flatten out to reveal the text behind it allowing you to see your notifications without obstruction. The center button serves as the home button, turning the screen on after it has timed out. The bottom button allows you to access the Master Tools which include a compass, barometer, altimeter and a timer. What is interesting about the Master Tools is that the mechanical hands that are used for telling time will adjust to the specific tool you are using to give you the most accurate reading available.
Additionally, the watch is designed to be water-resistant and can last up to 30 minutes at a depth of around 10ft. So at least you don’t have to worry when getting in and out of a swimming pool or hot tub while on vacation, as long as you don’t go too deep.
Inside the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 chipset battery. This may come as a surprise since they just released the 3100 version but with the planning, it took to create this smartwatch (3 or so years) it makes sense that LG wanted to stick with its original design so as not to disrupt the release date timeline.
Still, LG has said that the battery lasts up to two days when using the full range of features embedded in the product. If you want to use just the analog mode, it is said that the battery lasts up to 100 days, essentially making it is more of a timepiece than a smartwatch. Also, this smartwatch has 4GB of internal storage and 768MB of RAM
Smartwatch – SOFTWARE
Although the battery may not be the most advanced available, the software makes up for that. This smartwatch comes with Google’s latest Wear OS technology that allows you to have a more streamlined experience. This is true for when receiving notifications, setting up your personal shortcuts as well as viewing the health metrics on the Watch W7. One drawback, however, is the lack of a heart rate monitor on the back of the device. In place of that on the back of the device is the battery which can be easily placed on the charging station.
