The Best Costa Maya Beaches

Ever heard of Costa Maya? This beach town sits on the southeastern corner of Mexico. Its beaches cover the southern portion of the famous Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve all the way to Xkalak. Aside from that, this small town has a laid-back atmosphere that will appeal to those who want to slow down for a bit.

But Puerto Costa Maya isn’t as popular as Cancun or Los Cabos. This is surprising given that you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico here. However, this may be a good thing. After all, you get to have the place all to yourself! Unlike in Cancun or in Playa del Carmen where you will have to be quick to find a spot at the beach, here you will not have any problems at all.

Thanks to its location, there are areas where you can enjoy the beach in peace. This is why Costa Maya is the right spot to indulge in some quiet time. If you want to fully appreciate the beauty of this beach town, you should spend a few days or a week at least. I guarantee that you will not regret taking this trip.

A Brief Guide to Costa Maya

The small cruise port of Costa Maya lies on the Yucatan Peninsula. It is just 130 miles south of the beach town of Cozumel. Aside from that, it is home to the largest Mayan ruins as well as tiny fishing villages.

The local government transformed this town into the tourist area that we know today. In fact, they have upgraded the port to accommodate cruise ships. Today, the port of Costa Maya receives around 1.5 million cruise passengers each year.

In fact, Costa Maya has become a popular cruise port over the years. There are modern amenities at the cruise port terminal like free WiFi. Aside from that, it has swimming pools and areas for entertainment.

The port area can accommodate up to three cruise ships at the same time. In addition, there is a pavilion where cruise passengers can go and explore. Think shopping areas, entertainment centers, and saltwater pools at your disposal. Also, there is a beach club, bars, and restaurants on the spot. It doesn’t matter what kind of traveler you are, you will always find something to do here.

But there is more to Costa Maya than this. In fact, the Costa Maya cruise port serves as a gateway to an amazing adventure to this slice of paradise in Mexico.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The good news is that cruise ships travel to Costa Maya all the time. You can book a trip here any time of the year. The crowds depend mostly on the influx of cruise ship passengers at this port. Summer is the busiest time in Costa Maya so expect a lot of people here. Don’t worry because you will still have a great time when you go on a cruise to Costa Maya.

However, I recommend that you visit during the off-season. Since there are fewer people going on cruises during these times, you will get great deals. Also, you will have most of the beaches all to yourself. It will be the most rewarding time for you since there are fewer tourists.

Beaches Near Costa Maya Port

The Costa Maya port is one of the busiest ports on this side of the country. In fact, it was made to be able to accommodate cruise ships for tourism purposes. Passengers on board a cruise ship often disembark here to enjoy the sun, sand, and the sea. After all, there are white sand beaches and turquoise waters waiting for you here.

In fact, one of them is at Mahahual. This small town has a main street, dirt roads, and of course, one of the best beaches in Costa Maya.

  1. Mahahual Beach

If you are looking for the best beaches in Costa Maya, this is one of them. In fact, its close proximity to the Costa Maya cruise terminal is one of the best things about this beach. It is just a short drive away from the port. You can even walk all the way to the Mahahual if you like.

The vendors here sell everything under the sun. Aside from fresh coconut drinks, they also sell jewelry and clothes. Of course, the main reason why you are here is the beach itself. The water here is calm and shallow. This makes it an ideal spot for families to hang out.

Aside from that, Mahahual village is right next to it. You can head to an open bar for a drink or two or go shopping if you like. Also, the restaurants here are worth dining in. After all, they serve fresh seafood which hits the spot.

Since this is a tourist destination, be prepared to be asked to join excursions. If I were you, I would already book shore excursions prior to traveling here. This way you don’t have to worry about your itinerary. Also, you will be able to get back to the ship in time.

  1. Bacalar Lagoon

Meanwhile, Bacalar Lagoon is another option to consider. This is not on the beach, however. In fact, you will need to travel an hour to reach this gorgeous lagoon. You might think that traveling for an hour is a waste of time. You might be surprised on what awaits you there. In fact, I suggest you imagine white sand and crystal clear water. And without salt!

Aside from that, the lagoon itself has several areas that are considered as beaches. There are also beach clubs here that are worth looking into. It is possible to swim from the public piers which are around the lake. Some are even a short distance from the main town. Take note that some amenities, like lounge chairs, can be rented out for a fee.

Although it is possible to travel to Bacalar on your own. It is best to go on an excursion instead. There are several options available such as a catamaran cruise or kayak tours. Most of the tours offered will take you to this beautiful lagoon for various activities.

  1. La Bamba Beach

If you prefer something quieter than the crowded Mahahual Beach, La Bamba Beach is your best bet. It is just 20 minutes by car from the cruise port. As mentioned before, this beach tends to be on the quieter side. In fact, even the amenities provided here are on the rustic side. However, this adds to the overall charm of the place which is a plus.

In fact, you will feel rejuvenated after spending a few hours on this beach. Without any blaring music coming from bars and restaurants, you will feel relaxed here. Aside from that, there is also the La Bamba Beach Club on this spot. Get a day pass so you can enjoy their food and drinks. Also, you will have free use of a beach lounger too. This is a great way to spend some quiet time before heading out on more adventures.

  1. Xkalak Beach

Meanwhile, fishing enthusiasts should head to Xkalak Beach. In fact, this is a great place to do some fishing because of the variety of tropical fish in its waters. You will find most of them off the coast of the Xkalak fishing village. This is why it is one of the best jump-off points for fishing excursions.

Aside from that, Xkalak Beach is just a few miles away from Belize. This makes it one of the remotest parts of Mexico worth exploring. Also, this is one of the reasons why you will not see a lot of people in the area. For some, this is the main reason for them to head out to Xkalak Beach. Find a good spot under the swaying palm trees and just relax.

  1. Yaya Beach

Planning a beach day in Costa Maya? Head to Yaya Beach. It is just five minutes away by taxi from the port area making it accessible to everyone. In fact, it lies on the Malecon which is near the hotel zone in Mahahual. Take your pick from the beach bars and grab one of the beach chairs to sit and relax on.

I suggest that you grab a spot as early as you can. It’s because there is a limited number of guests accommodated here. Getting a day pass from this private beach club will give you free access to all of its amenities. Aside from that, there are local restaurants here where you can order fresh seafood dishes. Most of their meals come from the sea which makes them more flavorful. You can enjoy a scrumptious meal while gazing out at the blue waters.

Costa Maya’s pristine beaches are one of its major draws. In fact, the best way for you to enjoy them further is through a beach club.
